I have to confess though I'm absolutely delighted to oppose Tescos on Mill Road and annoyed that my Mum forgot to tell me about this march so I could come in from the Cambridgeshire village where I now live and work ( though she'd do anything to avoid her daughter the vicar doing anything embarrasssing like demonstrating, religion is bad enough)that every time I hear the multi-culturalism of Mill Road lauded I ahve to laugh. I was born in Mill Road maternity hopital, grew up on a street just off Mill ROad and remember vividly before it became multi-cultural, although some of the shops have been there since my childhood- well done Arjuna. I'm not saying it's not better for it, it just makes me smile.

Rumour here in leafy south Bucks has it that the CEO of Tesco made a bet with the then new Acquisitions Director, who had boasted that he could get a Tesco built ANYWHERE HE CHOSE. 'You're on' quoth the CEO, 'Gerrard's Cross.' CEO didn't know that AD was a golfing buddy of John Prescott, who overrode the many and extremely vociferous objections, and personally granted permission.

The only gap that was possible, however, was over the railway line. Building started - and stopped - and started - and stopped, when the just-newly constructed floor collapsed onto the line, luckily only injuring two people.

Building has not recommenced, and Tesco is very definitely No Comment-ing.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

My son's misreading of the strapline seemed apposite: "very little helps."
